3-D Mars' North Pole
This dramatic 3D view of Mars' north pole comes from elevation data collected by an orbiting laser. In 1998, the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter on the Global Surveyor spacecraft sent laser pulses to the Martian surface. By measuring the reflection time, MOLA created a detailed topographic map. The map shows the ice cap is about three kilometers thick.
