SN 1006: Pieces of the Cosmic Ray Puzzle
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
In 1912, physicist Victor Hess discovered cosmic rays, high-energy radiation from space. These are mostly subatomic particles, like protons and electrons, but their origin was a mystery for decades. X-ray images of supernova remnants, such as SN 1006, have helped solve part of this puzzle, showing these remnants are likely sources of cosmic rays.
