Aurora Over a Communications Tower
Auroras occur high above Earth, rarely below 60 kilometers, and can extend up to 1,000 kilometers. They form when energetic particles from the Sun strike molecules in our atmosphere. This photo captures a rare purple auroral corona, appearing over a communications tower. From space, auroras often form a circle around one of Earth's magnetic poles.
