Heat Shield Impact Crater on Mars
The impact site of the Opportunity rover's heat shield on Mars is a fascinating location, showing broken metal and scorched Martian terrain. The conical outer hull of the shattered heat shield is visible on the left. Further to the right, another section of the heat shield and the impact site itself can be seen. This site is particularly interesting because its creation was relatively well understood.
