Shell Game in the LMC
The Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our own, seen here through a filter that only lets through the red light of hydrogen atoms. This light is emitted as hydrogen, ionized by energetic starlight, recaptures its electron. The image shows shell-shaped clouds of hydrogen gas surrounding massive, young stars, sculpted by strong stellar winds and ultraviolet radiation.
