The aurora, a dance of light in Earth's upper atmosphere, is caused by charged particles from the Sun hitting atoms and molecules. This digitally enhanced photo from January 2005 shows an aurora over Alaska. These lights can reach altitudes of 1,000 kilometers, far above any mountain or airplane. From space, an entire aurora often appears as a circle around one of Earth's magnetic poles.
