M78 and Reflecting Dust Clouds in Orion
M78 and other bright reflection nebulae glow with an eerie blue light in Orion. Dark, filamentary dust clouds absorb some of this light, but also reflect the light of several bright blue stars that recently formed within the nebula. M78 is at the upper right of the image, while NGC 2071 is to its lower left. The blue color is from the same type of scattering that colors Earth's daytime sky.
