Layers in Aureum Chaos
These undulating shapes are not ocean waves, but layered rock outcrops in Aureum Chaos on Mars. Captured by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's HiRISE camera, the image uses false color to highlight the features. Aureum Chaos is a jumbled, eroded region within the Valles Marineris canyon. The distinct layers likely formed from dust or volcanic ash settling out of the atmosphere.
