Black Holes in Merging Galaxies
Violent galaxy mergers can activate supermassive black holes, creating intensely luminous objects called Active Galactic Nuclei, or AGN. New data from NASA's Swift satellite shows a strong link between these energetic X-ray sources and merging galaxies. This finding challenges earlier theories that only a small percentage of AGN were associated with mergers.
