Ice Fishing for Cosmic Neutrinos
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, built into the Antarctic ice, uses almost one hundred holes to detect cosmic neutrinos. Scientists melt vertical lakes into the ice, then lower strings of light detectors into each one. These detectors are sensitive to the blue light emitted when neutrinos collide with the ice. This allows us to study high-energy particles from space.
