X-Class Flare
On Valentine's Day in 2011, the Sun unleashed an X-class flare, one of its most powerful explosions. This extreme ultraviolet image from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captures the intense burst of radiation. The flare erupted from active region AR1158 in the Sun's southern hemisphere. The bright vertical streak is a momentary overwhelm of pixels in SDO's detectors.
