Two weeks ago, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured an impressive solar prominence erupting from the Sun's surface. This time-lapse video, taken in ultraviolet light, shows the dramatic explosion over 90 minutes. The scale of the prominence is immense; the Earth would easily fit beneath its curtain of hot gas. Prominences are made of cooler, denser plasma suspended in the Sun's hot corona.
