Curiosity Drops In
The HiRise camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) captured this image of the Curiosity rover's descent. The nearly 16-meter wide parachute and its payload are dropping through the thin Martian atmosphere. They are above plains just north of the sand dune field that borders Mount Sharp in Gale Crater. The MRO spacecraft was about 340 kilometers away when it took the picture.
