M72 is a globular cluster of stars, one of the less than 200 that remain in the Milky Way. These clusters are older than any other structures in our galaxy, dating back to when the galaxy first formed. Many were destroyed over the eons by encounters with each other or the galactic center. Surviving globular clusters like M72 are ancient relics, limiting the raw age of the universe.
