Comet Hale-Bopp Over Indian Cove
Comet Hale-Bopp, the Great Comet of 1997, was a spectacular sight. This photograph, taken on April 6, 1997, shows it from the Indian Cove Campground in Joshua Tree National Park. A flashlight briefly illuminated the foreground rocks during this six-minute exposure. The comet displayed an impressive blue ion tail above a white dust tail reflecting sunlight. Hale-Bopp was visible to the unaided eye for over a year.
