Exploring the Antennae
Sixty million light-years away, in the constellation Corvus, two large galaxies are colliding. Cataloged as NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, their stars rarely collide during the hundreds of millions of years this cataclysm takes. But their large clouds of molecular gas and dust often do, triggering furious episodes of star formation. This stunning composite view spans about 500,000 light-years.
