Today marks an equinox and a new moon, with both events occurring within a short span of time. The moon also reaches perigee, its closest point to Earth, around this time. This makes it the largest new moon of 2015, though it's hard to see as this phase presents the moon's dark side to Earth. This image of a young lunar phase from late January shows both the sunlit crescent and the faint glow of earthshine on the rest of the moon's disk.
