Into the Void
Fifty years ago, on June 3, 1965, Edward White became the first US astronaut to walk in space during the Gemini 4 mission. Mission commander James McDivit took this photo from inside the capsule as White's spacewalk began over the Pacific Ocean. The photo captures Earth, the spacecraft, and White's tether reflected in his gold-tinted helmet visor. He holds a gas-powered maneuvering gun in his right hand, though it ran out of gas after about three minutes.
