Ultraviolet Rings of M31
The Andromeda Galaxy, M31, is our closest large galactic neighbor, about 2.5 million light-years away. In this ultraviolet view from the GALEX satellite, its spiral arms appear more like rings. This is because ultraviolet light highlights young, hot stars, which are concentrated in these ring-like structures. The image required 11 different fields to capture the entire galaxy, which spans 260,000 light-years.
