Saturn's Iapetus: Painted Moon
Saturn's moon Iapetus has vast sections as dark as coal, while others are as bright as ice. The composition of the dark material is unknown, but infrared spectra indicate it possibly contains a dark form of carbon. Iapetus also has an unusual equatorial ridge, making it appear like a walnut. NASA's Cassini spacecraft swooped within 2,000 kilometers of this moon to help understand its unique appearance.
