The Helix Nebula from CFHT

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Helix Nebula, NGC 7293, is one of the brightest and closest planetary nebulae. It is a gas cloud formed at the end of a Sun-like star's life. The star's outer gases, expelled into space, appear as if we are looking down a helix. The remnant central core, destined to become a white dwarf, glows energetically, causing the expelled gas to fluoresce.
