The Busy Center of the Lagoon Nebula
The center of the Lagoon Nebula is a region of intense star formation. Two long, funnel-shaped clouds, each roughly half a light-year long, are visible near the image center. These structures were formed by extreme stellar winds and intense energetic starlight from a nearby, tremendously bright star, Herschel 36. Vast walls of dust hide and redden other hot young stars in the area.
