A Black Hole Disrupts a Passing Star
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
When a star gets too close to a black hole, the black hole's gravity can pull away its outer layers in what's called a tidal disruption event. Most of the star's gas doesn't fall in, but these events can be as bright as a supernova. Astronomers are now discovering more of them with automated surveys.
