An Infrared Galaxy Gallery
The Hubble Space Telescope's NICMOS instrument surveyed about 100 nearby spiral galaxies to find where stars form. This image shows six of those galaxies: NGC 5653, NGC 3593, NGC 891, NGC 6946, NGC 4826, and NGC 2903. NICMOS was calibrated to detect the glowing hydrogen common in hot star-forming regions, even in galaxies millions of light-years distant.
