Aurora Over Clouds

NASA APOD · Sigurdur H. Stefnisson
COSMIC MESSAGE

Aurorae form high above the clouds, as seen in this image. They occur when fast-moving particles from the Sun hit air molecules in Earth's upper atmosphere, typically around 100 kilometers up. For example, an oxygen molecule glows green when it regains an electron lost during a collision. Most clouds, by contrast, are below 10 kilometers in altitude, showing the vast difference in their heights.
