Rungs of the Red Rectangle
The Red Rectangle Nebula, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, shows a distinct X-shape and ladder-like rungs. This dusty cloud contains icy dust grains and hydrocarbon molecules. These materials form in the cool outflow from an aging central star. The unique shape is likely caused by a thick dust torus surrounding a close pair of stars at its center.
