NGC 188: Old Cluster in the New General Catalog

NASA APOD · Neven Krcmarek
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 188 is an open star cluster, one of the oldest known. It was cataloged in the New General Catalog, published in 1888, which consolidated astronomical discoveries from the Herschels and others. This cluster, unlike many others, is still gravitationally bound, holding onto its stars even after billions of years. It offers a glimpse into the long-term evolution of star clusters.
