COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Hale-Bopp, the Great Comet of 1997, was brighter than any surrounding stars and visible even over city lights. This photograph shows it above Val Parola Pass in the Dolomite mountains of Italy. The comet's blue ion tail, made of ions from its nucleus, is pushed out by the solar wind. The white dust tail is composed of larger dust particles.
