Sand Dunes Thawing on Mars
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
What are these strange shapes on Mars? Defrosting sand dunes near the pole. As spring begins in Mars's Northern Hemisphere, the dunes are thawing. Carbon dioxide and water ice sublime directly into gas in the thin atmosphere. Thinner ice regions defrost first, revealing dark sand that absorbs sunlight and speeds the thaw.
