Phoenix and the Snow Queen
The Phoenix Mars Lander's robotic arm camera captured this image, revealing a smooth, shiny feature dubbed the 'Snow Queen'. This area, near a landing leg and footpad, also shows a metal spring partially buried in the Martian soil. The spring is a piece of the arm's biobarrier, now opened. Scientists suspect the Snow Queen feature is subsurface ice, uncovered by the lander's thrusters.
