Abell 370: Galaxy Cluster Gravitational Lens
The strange arc in this image of galaxy cluster Abell 370 is a gravitational lens. Initially, astronomers were unsure what it was, as nothing like it had been seen before. In the mid-1980s, improved images revealed it to be light from a background galaxy, magnified and distorted by the cluster's immense gravity. This was a prototype of a new astrophysical phenomenon.
