Atoms-for-Peace Galaxy Collision
This is NGC 7252, a jumble of stars created by a collision between two large galaxies. Such an event takes hundreds of millions of years, so this image captures it frozen in time. The resulting chaos has been nicknamed the Atoms-for-Peace galaxy due to its resemblance to a cartoon of an atom. This might be a preview of what happens when our Milky Way collides with Andromeda in a few billion years.
