50 Years Ago: Yuri's Planet
Fifty years ago, on April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. His Vostok 1 spacecraft carried him once around Earth at an altitude of 200 miles. He described his view: "The sky is very dark; the Earth is bluish. Everything is seen very clearly." This image, taken from the International Space Station in 2003, offers a similar perspective of our planet from orbit.
