Lunar Eclipses
Earth's dark, inner shadow, called the umbra, is shaped like a cone extending into space. This composite image illustrates the full extent of the circular shadow using images from both partial and total lunar eclipses. The images, spanning from 1997 to 2012, show different parts of the umbra. The complete cross section of the umbra is larger than the Moon's angular size.
