Kepler-78b: Earth-Sized Planet Discovered
Kepler-78b is an exoplanet only slightly larger than Earth, but its orbit is extreme. It circles its Sun-like star 40 times closer than Mercury orbits our Sun. At this distance, the planet's surface would be molten. Current models of planet formation suggest that a planet should not be able to form or survive in such a close orbit. This discovery challenges our understanding of how planetary systems evolve.
