Philae Attempts Comet Nucleus Landing
Today, humanity attempts to land a probe on the nucleus of a comet for the first time. The Philae lander will separate from the Rosetta spacecraft and descend to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Because the comet's surface texture is unknown and its gravity is low, Philae will try to harpoon itself to the surface. This artist's illustration shows the dishwasher-sized Philae as it approaches the comet.
