Charon: Moon of Pluto
Charon, Pluto's largest moon, has a dark, mysterious north polar region informally called Mordor Macula. This high-resolution portrait was captured by New Horizons during its closest approach in July. The image data, transmitted in September, combines blue, red, and infrared to enhance colors, showing surface variations at about 2.9 kilometers per pixel. Charon is 1,214 kilometers across.
