Dark Dust and Colorful Clouds near Antares
The region near Antares and Rho Ophiuchi is filled with colorful dust. Blue reflection nebulae are fine dust illuminated from the front by starlight. Reddish emission nebulae are gaseous clouds with atoms excited by ultraviolet starlight. Backlit dust clouds appear dark. Antares, a red supergiant, lights up the yellow-red clouds on the lower left of the image. The entire region is about 550 light-years away in Scorpius.
