NGC 602 and Beyond
NGC 602 is a young star cluster, about 5 million years old, located in the Small Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy 200 thousand light-years away. This Hubble image shows the cluster surrounded by natal gas and dust. Energetic radiation and shock waves from NGC 602's massive young stars have eroded the surrounding material, creating fantastic ridges and swept-back shapes. Look beyond the clouds and stars, and you'll see the forces shaping new stellar nurseries.
