Messier 101
Messier 101 is a large spiral galaxy, one of the last entries in Charles Messier's catalog. It spans about 170,000 light-years, nearly twice the size of our Milky Way. Lord Rosse observed M101 in the 19th century with his Leviathan telescope. This image is a composite of 51 exposures from the Hubble Space Telescope, with additional ground-based data.
