Zeta Oph: Runaway Star
Zeta Ophiuchi is a runaway star, about 20 times more massive than the Sun, plowing through interstellar space. It moves at 24 kilometers per second, creating an arcing bow shock. This infrared portrait shows the star near the center, with its strong stellar wind compressing and heating the dusty interstellar material. The curved shock front is a result of this interaction, located about 460 light-years away.
