Dark Markings of the Sky
American astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard cataloged these dark markings of the sky in the early 20th century. These dark nebulae are interstellar clouds of gas and dust. They are visible in silhouette against rich star fields and stellar nurseries near our galaxy's plane. This deep image from the 21st century reveals many of Barnard's cataloged objects.
