These formations, called stromatolites, are living examples of one of Earth's oldest life forms. Fossils indicate that stromatolites appeared about 3.7 billion years ago, before many of the stars in our night sky. In this image from Western Australia, only the ancient central arch of our Milky Way Galaxy formed earlier. Even the Magellanic Clouds, satellite galaxies visible in the sky, are younger.
