Cyclone Paths on Planet Earth

This map shows the paths of all major cyclones, known as hurricanes in the Atlantic and typhoons in the Pacific, from 1985 through 2005. Cyclones primarily occur over water, as evaporating warm water provides their energy. They never cross, and rarely approach, the Earth's equator. This is because the Coriolis effect, which is essential for cyclone formation, diminishes to zero there.
